Text:
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Focus Verses:
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
I know its Father’s Day, so let’s not make it only about the sons. Father’s have either a child or children, so testify to someone and tell them
“I Am His Child”
Intro:
We see that there is a “But” at verse 9, we need to understand what is going on in the previous passage.
Paul writes to the Roman church and if you would permit me I want to read this from the NLT.
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.
(Comment)
Then Paul states to the believers “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit. As believers, we should be in the Spirit, not in the flesh.
When we do what we want to do we are in the flesh. When we operate under the control of our flesh, we give into unrestrained disobedience to the will of God. Our flesh will not obey God’s word, it will do just the opposite.
And as long as we operate in the flesh, we will never please God.
When you let your feelings dictate your actions, when you let your feelings dictate the things that come out of your mouth, when you do what you feel is right in your own eyes and disregard the will of God you are operating in the flesh.
You can be a preacher, you can preach the house down......but have envy in your heart......you cannot please God!
You can be a choir member, and you sing for the praises of men and you think you can out-sing anyone, you can bring people to tears, but you live in sin....you cannot please God.
You can come to church everyday of the week, but your a busy body in others peoples matters, spreading misinformation and lies and talking about things you really don’t know what your talking about.....you cannot please God.
See we focus on the big stuff a lot of times. You think you perfect holiness, suppose to have the Holy Ghost, but you got a mouth on you that is unbridled and out of control. You use that mouth to hurt people and say hurtful things.......YOU CANNOT PLEASE GOD!
These are just some things that we as church people deal with. We can think that we are alright and in reality be all wrong and out of the will of God.
But when you walk in the Spirit, and you allow the Holy Ghost to dictate your thoughts and actions you can please God. That’s why you need the Holy Ghost, you don’t need it just to shout, you don’t need it just to speak in tongues, you don’t need it just to prophesy, you need the Holy Ghost because you need the Spirit of God to control you!
Paul writes “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, “IF”......conditional clause there. “IF so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
The word is the word.......I know that there are many professed Christians in the world. There are many that call themselves a child of God. But the word says......”Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
IT IS NOT ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL CONVICTIONS OR BELIEFS, IT IS NOT ABOUT WHAT YOUR INERRANT PASTOR TOLD YOU.......IT IS ABOUT WHAT THE WORD OF GOD SAYS AND GOD’S WORD IS ALL THAT MATTERS!
Next verse says:
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Your body is going to die......but the Spirit of God gives you life! Because when you receive the Holy Ghost and the Spirit resides in you, you are made right with God, because God cannot dwell in an unclean temple.
Paul declares in the next verse that the Spirit of God that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. That’s power! Do you understand saints of God the power that you have in you. Stop living beneath your privilege, stop living a powerless, helpless life, in the corner afraid when the devil tries you......YOU HAVE POWER IF YOU HAVE THE HOLY GHOST!
And if you have the power living in you that raised Jesus up from the dead, when you die, in the last day, the LORD is going to raise you up from the dead.
Then Paul declares in verse 12 “You have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.” Remember you have POWER and Jesus died to give you this power!
And it is through the power of the Holy Ghost, Paul says, that we have to put to death the deed of our sinful nature.....and by doing so we will live.
So here comes the focus verse:
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
If you have received the Holy Ghost, if you have received the Spirit of God you are children of God. And that’s why I can’t understand why people won’t seek the infilling of the Holy Ghost.
They don’t want it, they want nothing to do with it, they want to come to church, they want to go through their Sunday rituals, even their daily rituals, but they want nothing to do with the Holy Ghost.
How can you reject a gift......Peter when he preached on Pentecost Acts 2, he called it “the gift of the Holy Ghost.” It is precious, it is something you don’t have to pay for. It is something that God wants you to have.......and people reject it!
But without his Spirit you can’t truly call yourself a child of God.
Take the word at face value!
Sons = Hyios
Theological Point:
Jesus was begotten of the Holy Ghost.
And it is the power of the same Holy Ghost that makes us the sons/children of God. We are BORN AGAIN of the water (symbolizing washing of the word and also water baptism) and of the Spirit (regeneration or renewal of the mind toward the things of God).
When you are a son of God, according to what the scriptures says, Thayer’s theological dictionary says this about being a son of God:
“those whom God esteems as sons, whom he loves, protects and benefits above others”
It’s just like a natural father that loves his children.
I’ve come to let every son of God, every daughter of God that God loves you!
This is why John writes in his epistle:
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.
The world, the unsaved don’t really know who you are because they don’t know God. Some of them think you’ve lost your mind.
They think you’ve lost your mind when disaster hits and instead of you crying, you praise the LORD anyhow.
They think you’ve lost your mind when you’re at work and you break out in a song.
They think you’ve lost your mind when they see you blessing those who curse you.
No we haven’t lost our mind, our faith is in our Heavenly Father who loves us!
And if God loves me, and if I am His child, then I have faith to know that no matter what happens in life, God will take care of me!
I need you to testify to someone today, get that situation on your mind that you’re going through and tell your neighbor.....”Neighbor.......my heavenly father is going to take care of me!”
Thayer recorded that God loves, God protects, and God benefits us!
Paul then says in verse 15:
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
When you live in sin, you are under the spirit of bondage and you should fear God and fear the judgement that is to come. But Paul says for the believe that has been called “sons of God”
“But ye have received the Spirit of adoption.”
Every Spirit filled believe tell your neighbor “God has adopted me into his family.”
God has adopted you as his own children. Do you know how special you are?
And guess what......YOU DIDN’T DESERVE TO BE ADOPTED! THAT OUGHT TO PUT A PRAISE ON SOMEONES LIPS. WE DIDN’T DESERVE TO BE ADOPTED, we were messed up, we were imperfect, we were sinners, living out of the will of God. BUT HE LOVED ME ENOUGH TO WASH ME IN HIS BLOOD, CLEAN ME, FORGIVE ME SINS, FILL ME WITH HIS SPIRIT AND CALL ME HIS CHILD!
As a child, I could remember times that Momma wasn’t always there to clean me up and get me ready to go out. Daddy had to clean me up. I COULDN’T DO IT BY MYSELF AS A CHILD......DAD WOULD GET THAT OLD SAFEGUARD SOAP, PUT IT ON A WASH CLOTH, SCRUB MY FACE.....AND DADDY HAD HEAVY HANDS, SCRUB MY BODY, THEN PUT MY CLOTHES ON ME, AND IT WAS PRESENTABLE TO GO OUT IN PUBLIC!
AND THAT’S WHAT THE LORD HAS TO DO......YOU CANNOT CLEAN YOURSELF UP, THE LORD HAS TO CLEAN YOU UP!
Jesus tried to wash Simon’s feet at the last supper and Simon Peter forbid it. And Jesus told him, “If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me/Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”
Peter replied “Lord not my feet only, but also my hands and my head”
And that’s the prayer that someone needs to pray......I think we all need to pray that prayer, but take it a step further, “LORD WASH ME THROUGH AND THROUGH!”
Wash my head/mind so I think the right thoughts.
Wash my eyes so that I see right.
Wash my ears so I can hear right.
Wash my feet so that I walk in your will!
Come on saints of God, come everyone that needs to be washed lift your hands and say “Wash me LORD”
When we receive the Spirit of adoption, Paul says we cry Abba, Father. Notice hear that Abba is capitalized. It is a noun, a noun is a person place or thing. Your name is capitalized because you are a person.
Therefore “Abba” is an endearing emphatic title of our heavenly Father.
Jesus used it:
And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
This means that the same relationship that Jesus had with the Father......we have been given access to the same relationship and benefits!
Next verse:
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Close:
Paul then in the next few verse begins to talk about the future glory that God has for the saints.
We are going to suffer in this life. I don’t care who you are, you are going to suffer one way or another.
Some of us are suffering right now.....we are going through it!
But Paul writes:
Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.
Matter of fact, Paul records later in this passage that all of creation has been suffering and groaning.
Paul records in verse 23, that we as believers we suffer and groan too, even though we have the Holy Ghost, waiting for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering!
And we are waiting eagerly with hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us!
And while we suffer, while we go through, the same Spirit that makes us children of God, helps us in our weakness!
Paul says there are times we don’t know what to pray for, but the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
LET’S END ON THIS NOTE:
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
When the Holy Ghost prays for you, you might not know what you are saying......but the Holy Ghost is making intercession for you! The Holy Ghost is pleading for you, in harmony with God’s will.
And because we are his children, and because He has given us his Spirit, and because we have a future glory waiting for us, and because we are heirs of God:
AND WE KNOW THAT GOD CAUSES EVERTHING TO WORK TOGEHTER FOR THE GOOD OF THOSE WHO LOVE GOD AND ARE CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE FOR THEM!
Encourage 3 people and just tell them.......everything is working for your good! Now testify to another 3 and tell them “God said, EVERYTHING IS WORKING FOR MY GOOD!”
THE PAIN
THE DISAPPOINTMENT
THE FAILURE
THE GOOD
THE BAD
THE UGLY
IT’S WORKING FOR MY GOOD........SOME KIND OF A WAY......GOD IS GOING TO TURN IT IN MY FAVOR!!!!
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
